The Cuisine of Sicily

There’s a lot to like about Sicily but like most of Italy, a great attraction is the local food.

Sicilian cuisine is incredibly unique. Although much of it is clearly Italian because there is plenty of pasta, olive oil, wine, and seafood, there are also some local ingredients that clearly stand out.

Raisins and saffron crop up in the island’s most famous dishes and cooking techniques differ from those found on the mainland.

Although the cuisine in Sicily has a lot in common with Italian cuisine, it also has Greek, Spanish, French, North African, and Arab influences.  You will be enjoying some of the best food in all of Europe – what’s not to like?

OMG, if you consider yourself a foodie, you are going to be in heaven!  Sicilian food will definitely excite and delight you.

Of course, we can adjust to any dietary needs.

Arancini  – What’s not to love about a ball of creamy risotto rice that’s breaded and deep-fried? This iconic Sicilian dish is the one thing you simply must try when in Sicily.  We dine on Arancini stuffed with various deliciousness one evening during our stay.

Caponata – This appetizer is the perfect example of the other ethnic influences over Sicily’s cuisine.  This dish contains stewed eggplant, pine nuts, raisins, celery, onion, and tomatoes flavored with capers and olives and a bit of vinegar.

Pasta Alla Norma (Involtini) – In the area of Catania where we will be staying, we find one of Sicily’s most famous pasta dishes. Pasta all Norma is the best representation of Sicilian cuisine.  It makes the most of local tomatoes, eggplant, garlic, basil, and Ricotta Salata.

Cannoli – Sicily has a fair share of famous sweet dishes and desserts as well as mainland Italy. One of the most famous is cannoli, little deep-fried pastry tubes piped full of creamy ricotta.  Quite delightful and known all over the world.

This is only a small sampling of all the delicacies that you will enjoy while on our retreat.  Our in-house chef will also be preparing a Couscous Party for us one evening.
